Sirens are one of the main components of a security system.  In the event of an alarm, the control panel triggers the Siren to sound, making everyone in the immediate vicinity, including the burglar, aware of the intrusion.  If you have a combination Burglar/Fire system, the siren can even announce the type of alarm (e.g. "Fire, Fire, Leave Immediately!")  Which an optional component called a "voice driver."
